How a conical hat is made
Nowadays, people in Viet Nam use hats made from cloth or plastic but many people still prefer wearing hats made from leaves. They say it's more comfortable and cooler to wear conical hats. A conical hat looks simple but the hat makers have to follow 15 stages, from going to the forests to collect special leaves, choosing the quality ones, drying and ironing them to making frames, etc. Conical hats always have two layers of leaves. Hat makers must be very skilful to make the two layers very thin. In Hue, the artisans make special conical hats by adding poems or paintings of Hue between the two layers to create famous Bai tho or poetic conical hats. Making conical hats now represents one of the traditional crafts of Viet Nam.
