Read the following passage and choose the best option to answer each of the following questions.
Smoking is one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the UK. Every year around 78,000 people in the UK die from smoking and many more live with smoking-related illnesses. It increases your risk of developing more than 50 serious health conditions. Some may be fatal, and others can cause irreversible long-term damage to your health. You can become ill if you smoke yourself or if people around you smoke (passive smoking). Smoking causes around 7 out of every 10 cases of lung cancer (70%). It also causes cancer in many other parts of the body, including the throat or voice box (larynx). Moreover, smoking damages your heart and your blood circulation, increasing your risk of developing conditions such as coronary heart disease and heart attack. Breathing in secondhand smoke, also known as passive smoking, increases your risk of getting the same health conditions as smokers. For example, if you have never smoked but you have a spouse who smokes, your risk of developing lung cancer increases by about a quarter. Babies and children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of secondhand smoke. A child who’s exposed to passive smoke is at increased risk of developing chest infection, meningitis, persistent cough and, if they have asthma, their symptoms will get worse.
1. What is the main idea of the passage?
1. “It is raining outside now.” - “OK. I (take) ________an umbrella.”
Read the passage and the statements below and decide whether they are TRUE (T) or FALSE (F).
Mental and physical health are the two most commonly discussed types of health. We also talk about “spiritual health,” “emotional health,” and “financial health,” among others. These have also been linked to lower stress levels and mental and physical wellbeing.
Physical wellbeing involves pursuing a healthful lifestyle to decrease the risk of disease. Maintaining physical fitness, for example, can protect and develop the endurance of a person’s breathing and heart function, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition. Physical health and well-being also help reduce the risk of an injury or health issue. Examples include minimizing hazards in the workplace, practicing good hygiene, or avoiding the use of tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs.
Mental health refers to a person’s emotional, social, and psychological wellbeing. Mental health is as important as physical health to a full, active lifestyle. It Is harder to define mental health than physical health, because, in many cases, diagnosis depends on the individual’s perception of their experience.
Physical and mental health are linked. If chronic illness affects a person’s ability to complete their regular tasks, this may lead to depression and stress, for example, due to money problems. It is important to approach “health” as a whole, rather than its different types.
1. Emotional and physical health are the most commonly types of health. 2. Pursuing a healthy lifestyle is the aim of physical wellbeing. 3. Avoiding smoking is one of the examples of the physical health. 4. Mental health refers to a person’s psychological wellbeing. 5. It is more important to approach a type of health than the whole |
