On March 7, 1876, Bell was awarded a patent on the first telephone. He founded the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1885. Many other inventions marked Bell’s later life, including groundbreaking work in optical telecommunications, hydrofoils, and aeronautics. He also founded The National Geographic Society and was one of the first presidents and editors of the magazine. Bell died peacefully at his home in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, on August 2, 1922.
